Troubleshooting Photos –

Information About The Site

This section provides several blocks of information you may find useful:

  • Site Menu – A list of the contents of the site.
  • Links – Other photo-oriented sites worth visiting.
  • Notes & Contacts (on this page) – A bit about the site's organization, particularly for those on slower connections, copyright, privacy and how to contact us to deal with any issues you may have with the site.

Recommendations

We don't recommend anything (other than taking lots of pictures and enjoying yourself while doing it). We like the stance of public-broadcasting cook, the late Julia Child, who disguised the brand names on her tools in the belief that the hand that holds the tool is more important than the tool. If products are listed, the list is intended to inform, not recommend. Lists are in alphabetical order, not preference.

Privacy

No one likes spam. Not you, not us. We will never give your name, your mailing address or any other information about you to anyone else. Period.

Copyright

The contents of this site are Copyright David Weatherston or specific items' respective creators, be they authors, photographers or illustrators. Changes in US copyright law, harmonizing it with the rest of the world, render this material copyright from the date of creation without the need for a specific declaration. The appearance of this material on the Web does not place it in the public domain. Read the US Copyright Office's FAQ if you don't understand copyright and its protections.

That said, the purpose of this site is help you make better digital photos and prints. Therefore you are encouraged to link to our content when a link is appropriate. No permission is required for a link, though we'd be glad to hear from you.

If you want to use any of this material for commercial or non-commercial use, please .

Optimized for anything

The whole point of the Web is that people should have access to information no matter what sort of computer they have. Therefore, this site is designed to run on all platforms and all contemporary browsers (issued in the last two or three years). It is not 'optimized for IE 6' or whatever; instead it complies with Web standards – mostly. Ironically this page generates an error because it contains a small Javascript that hides an e-mail address from spammers; other pages are fine.

So... run it on whatever you like. Note, however, that the site does demand Javascript to make the menus work and it is:

  • Best viewed via a fast connection. Almost every page contains rollover images to let you compare different effects or results and these pages can run 200 Kb or more. This is no fun on a dial-up connection so there is:
  • a search page with thumbnails that links to...
  • a page that provides an enlarged version of the problem picture and a slightly longer description of the problem.

This should give you a chance to narrow your search for a solution without too many lengthy waits. Incidentally, while we are regret we cannot serve earlier browsers and operating systems, we stand behind the decision not to do so, as we are confident that possession of a digital camera will make you want to upgrade soon.

If you have a current browser, and you still find issues with the site, we'd really appreciate hearing from you.

A few minor points about design decisions intended to simplify navigation:

  • links to pages within the site have no special identifier – they're just links;
  • links to a definition are marked with an open book icon and open in a new window (except within the Definitions page itself); and
  • links to external sites are marked with an arrow icon, like this Google link and open in a new window.
  • the view-camera icon at the bottom of each page is a link back to the top of the page.

Contact

If you think there is:

  • misinformation on this site;
  • a photo problem that you'd like to see covered;
  • a functional problem (like a rollover that doesn't work);
  • even a misspelling,

drop us .
